Robert Everett Stanard
I will use this home page to tell a bit about myself. My name is Robert
Stanard and I am originally from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. I was
born in N.E. Washington D.C., but before I reached the age of one my family
moved a few miles away to Hyattesville, Maryland. My family resided there
until I was nine, at which time we move to Silver Spring Maryland, where my
older sister and I grew up and graduated from Springbrook High School.
Upon high school graduation, I was accepted to the Georgia Institute of
Technology, where I majored in mechanical engineering . During my six
undergraduate years, I not only learned about mechanical engineering, but I
also learned about life with all of its ups and downs. The journey was hard
and road seemed endless, but I made it through.
At Georgia Tech, I acquired cooperative work assignments and internships
beginning my freshman year. Although it took me longer to graduate, I was able
to help pay my way through school while acquiring valuable engineering
experience. I have completed a total of ten cooperative work terms and/or
research internships, which amounts to three years of practical mechanical
engineering experience. I received a Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical
Engineering at Georgia Tech with a cooperative certificate in March of 1994.
I am also very active in the community and on campus. While at Georgia Tech,
I was involved in a Big Brother program in which I was a positive role model
for a disadvantaged inner city youth. I also volunteered to tutor 7th and 8th
grade students at a local middle school in Atlanta. During my Senior year in
college I was elected as the mechanical engineering Student Government
Association (SGA) representative. I have also been an active member of Omega
Psi Phi Fraternity since 1989. In my fraternity, I have been recognized during
two consecutive years for my academic achievements and service. Some other
activities and groups that I have been involved in include: The U.C. Berkeley
Superb Program, The National Society Of Black Engineers, Engineer in Training,
The Cooperative Division, The High School Outreach program, church, and
recreational sports. Theses experience give me the opportunity to give back to
my community, increase my awareness of my surroundings as well as ensure the
well roundness of my character.
During my senior year at Georgia, I was awarded the National GEM scholarship
which granted me a full scholarship through out a masters degree program. My
scholarship sponsor was the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. I was also accepted
into the University of California, Berkeley mechanical engineering graduate
school. Therefore, I choose to pursue a masters degree in mechanical
engineering at U.C. Berkeley.
I am currently in my first year of graduate school at the University of
California, Berkeley. I am a member of The Berkeley Expert Systems and
Technology Laboratory under the direction of professor Alice Agogino. I am
working on various projects dealing with manufacturing, design, multimedia and
I hope to make a positive impact in my research and course work here at
Berkeley.
In reflection, my life victories are not mine alone, for I have been truly
blessed. I feel that God has truly smiled upon me with parents who have
instilled in me the values of hard work, determination, perseverance and who
have also provided my with educational, career, business, and spiritual
guidance. I thank Him for all his assistance through out every path that I
have chosen. Without the positive influences and blessing that I have
received, many things would not have been possible in my life.
