You are a junior partner working for a management consulting firm which handles large accounts with various corporations and plants. You come into work today and receive this letter from your boss and must act on it immediately. Dear Partner:     I have a sad news for you. The services of Mr. S. Gilchrist, senior partner, have been lost to the firm for an indef inite period of time due to his illness. We need you to assume some of his responsibilities immediately.     More specifically, four major clients: DuPont Corporation, Clorox Corporation, Invar Manufacturing and Northern Telecom, were each to have had an operating division begin a manufacturing strategy analysis with our firm. As you know from your own experience as a junior partner on similar projects, this preliminary phase is exploratory but critical. You must draft a mission statement that will realistically express the competitive focus for all activities pursued by the manufacturing functions as they cooperate with other business functions over the next few years. Each division has one plant and management team comprised of manufacturing, accounting, finance, engineering, human resources and marketing.     You have access to the plant floor and managers in each of the above mentioned functional areas.
