Around the World in 5 Years

Perhaps the best part of being a graduate student means you can travel for extended periods of time, even though the travels are often on a shoestring. I have compiled a list of WWW sites of cities and countries that I have traveled to during the past few years.

Country Web-site Travel Tip
Canada Montreal Best times to visit are during the International Jazz Festival during the last week of June or the International Fireworks Competition every weekend in June and July.
France La France Don't miss the Musee de L'Orangerie in Paris. The best food can be found in Aix-en-Provence.
Indonesia Travelling in Indonesia Remember _always_ to eat with your right hand when not using utensils.
Italy Travel Italy Rome is expensive so be sure to find hostels by visiting the head office at Via Cavour 44 in Rome.
Mexico Oaxaca In Oaxaca, eat at El Biche Pobre II and stay at Casa de Huespedes Arnel both mentioned in the Lonely Planet Travel Guide for Mexico.
Singapore Singapore Tourist Promotion Board If you can afford it, fly Singapore Airlines. You can find cheap fares by taking a courier flight if you don't mind traveling without luggage.
Spain Spain Tour
and Barcelona
Not to miss cities are Toledo (beautiful city and an HI hostel with pool), Gand&iacutea (HI hostel on the strand) and Logroń (best tapas in the country).
The World Round-the-World Journey Information about my around-the-world trip including where I went, insurance, money, flights and the like.
Cambodia Kingdom of Cambodia I visited Angkor Wat in Cambodia in December 2000.
Laos Lao PDR I traveled to Laos Laos in January 2001 and flew Lao Aviation. Apparently you must now (March 2001) obtain a tourist visa before you arrive in Laos.

As a final note, here are what I consider the essentials for a successful traveler.

  • Dana Design Backpack
  • Pair of Birkenstocks
  • A travel guide such as Rough Guides or Footprint but certainly not the preposterously self-righteous Let's Go or pseudo-uber-cool Lonely Planet.
  • An Open Mind
