Here is an example of an implementation of the "smart drawing" methodology. This CAD drawing of a building's HVAC system documents the cooling and energy load analyses. By selecting a graphical element in the drawing such as a blower or duct and using the information content of this document as the query, the designer can automatically retrieve related information such as a memo containing specifications for maximum energy load or in this case the vendor data from a relational database. As an aside, this was enough to convince the Navy of the efficacy of the "smart drawing" based system.
