End of Year Greetings -- 2003

from Dale Gieringer and Alice Agogino and Adrian and Arianne

Dear Friends:

A memorable year - the war in Iraq, the Columbia disaster, Schwarzenegger terminating Gov. Davis, Saddam captured, the 100th anniversary of flight, dramatic court victories for medical marijuana in California.

This summer we traveled to Scandinavia, sailed up the Norwegian Coast on the Hurtigruter ferry past the Arctic Circle to the North Cape of Europe, toured the Sami reindeer country in Finland, then on to Stockholmz, where Alice met Princess Victoria of Sweden. .

Alice is president of the Association of Academic Women at UC Berkeley and is involved in new programs to promote gender equity; she is happy that over 40% of new faculty hires last year were women, versus 20% a few years ago. She is also chair of the SESAME Doctoral Progam (Studies in Engineering Science & Math Education) this year.

Arianne is a sophomore at CPS, active in Junior Students of America and winning awards on the debate team.

Dale was encouraged by the excellent results of his research on smokeless cannabis vaporization, which he presented in Cologne. He is now involved in an Oakland initiative to tax and regulate cannabis for the public good. Dramatic court victories for several good friends on the medical marijuana front: Ed Rosenthal, the Osburns, Scott Imler, and Steve McWilliams success- fully turned back Attorney General Ashcroft's efforts to imprison them for growing medicine for the sick under California law; this week, Angel Raich won a stunning victory in the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upholding her right to use medical marijuana under federal law.

Adrian finished his PhD dissertation, "Design and Control of Large Collections of Learning Agents," and has returned to the Bay Area to work for NASA as a post-doc on autonomous agents.

Arianne graduated from Bentley and has entered the 9th grade at College Preparatory School in Oakland. She is learning to play the electric guitar.
