New Year 2000 in New Zealand

We were one of the first to say good-bye to the old millennium and hello to the new from the Eastern-most outpost on the mainland of New Zealand -- East Cape and Hick's Bay.

The East Cape Lighthouse

Hundreds were camped out on New Year's Eve in hopes of seeing the "first light" of the new millennium. The remote East Cape Lighthouse is on the Eastern-most point on the main islands of New Zealand. It has fantastic views along with a long steep climb from the beach. The wind can be intense, but perfect for parasailing.
