EVENT:EGG DROP CONTEST
LEVEL:JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
TYPE OF CONTEST:TEAM
COMPOSITION OF TEAM:1-2 STUDENTS PER TEAM
NUMBER OF TEAMS:5 TEAMS PER CENTER

OVERVIEW:

To build a container of restricted size which will keep as many eggs as possible from breaking after a fall from a height to be determined by the Host Center.
MATERIALS:

LEGAL: Large, fresh, raw, white chicken eggs; Paper tape, transparent tape, masking tape, scotch tape.

ILLEGAL: "Treated" or hard-boiled eggs. Rotten eggs. No duct tape, reinforced tape, or shipping tape will be allowed inside or outside the container.

The container may not include peanut butter, jell-o, liquids or any other substance that will splatter, fruits or vegetables (popcorn is okay), powdered soap, flammable substances of any kind or glass. Any aerodynamic or restraining devices of any kind. Any substance which may cause harm to a person or university property.
RULES:

  1. Students must design and construct a container. Commercially constructed containers will not be legal.
  2. Eggs may not be "treated" in any manner (e.g. hard-boiled as stated above).
  3. No more than one entry per team/person is permitted.
  4. No dimension of a container shall measure more than 14 inches. The container (with eggs) must pass through a 14-inch diameter rigid hoop when turned at all angles, including diagonals.
  5. All entries must be clearly labeled with entrant's name, school, MESA Center, and number of eggs within container; any special instructions regarding, for example how to drop the container must be clearly marked.
  6. The container, with eggs, will be released by a impartial party from a recommended height of 6 stories.

SPECIFICATION CHECK

  1. Immediately upon submission for competition, the containers receive a specification check to determine whether it conforms to dimensions, materials, and construction rules. Any container which fails the specification check will be disqualified (container may not be modified for competition during of after judging).
  2. Judges may disqualify any entry if, in their opinion, the dropping of the container might create a safety hazard for spectators or property.
  3. Container is weighed and its weight recorded.

JUDGING:

  1. Containers and eggs will be inspected after the drop. Surviving eggs will be broken to insure that they are fresh and have NOT been hard-boiled.
  2. Container with greatest number of surviving eggs will be declared the winner (e.g. 4 eggs beats 3, 2 eggs beat 1, etc.). Cracked eggs are not considered to have survived. The NUMBER of surviving eggs will be the first criterion (e.g. 4 eggs beats 3, 2 eggs beat 1, etc.). If there is a tie among containers with the most surviving eggs, the entry with the highest survival ratio wins. Survival Ratio = number of surviving eggs divided by total eggs in container (e.g. 3 out of 4 eggs beats 3 out of 5 eggs; 10 out of 10 eggs beats 10 out of 11 eggs). If a tie still exists after calculating survival ratio, the lightest container shall win.

AWARDS: Awards will given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
