Quarterly Report - April 1998

Prepared by Alice M. Agogino (Associate Dean of Engineering) and Youhao Jing (Graduate Research Assistant).

Project Objectives and Milestones for Quarter.
Presentations of the Interactive MESA project were given to parents, students and teachers during a number of MESA events during the 1997/98 academic year.

On April 4, we launched the Interactive MESA Egg Drop Competition web page, along with the Egg Drop Design Studio. The MESA Day competitions were highlighted in the April 13, 1998 issue of the Engineering News with title: MESA DAY 98: MESA Cracks the Mystery of Engineering for Young Students.

On MESA Day, the students egg drop containers were weighed and measured. Digital images of the students were also taken and used to construct student home pages and thumbnail images for use in SpeakEasy. After the actual preliminary competitions, the students used the Interactive MESA Web site at: http://best.me/~mesa/cheer/design/design_w.html to go through an egg drop simulation, view their web pages and use the SpeakEasy system.

The milestones associated with launching the egg drop MESA Day competition were met.

Problems and Obstacles.
The computer facilities currently available at the target MESA schools are not readily accessible to our MESA students. The classroom computer under the direction of our teacher at Madison Middle School is not yet connected to Internet.

Programmatic Changes.
Given the problems with computer and Internet access at target MESA schools we have had to focus on the UCB preliminary MESA competition to give students access to our web site. We plan to follow up with the students who participated on an individual basis and work with them to identify appropriate access for them.

Evaluation Data Collected.
Pre-questionnaires were given out.

Reports, Documents, Publications, or Other Work Produced.
