Treating drinking water in Bangladesh
In March new BEST lab member Johanna Mathieu, and Physics graduate student Susan Amrose, traveled to Bangladesh to field test the effectiveness of a method for removing for natural arsenic from village drinking water. The method, ARUBA - Arsenic Removal Using Bottom Ash - was developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab by Dr. Ashok Gadgil. It is exciting because it uses readily available waste ash coated in ferric hydroxide to treat water and is therefore very cheap for locals. Results from the visit were encouraging, effectively removing arsenic from all sources below Bangladeshi standards.
